The election for President of the Republic is an undertaking of national importance. The majority of the voters do not know this because the system of electoral propaganda of the ruling classes makes people argue about useless things. For example, a pile of paper is being used up to argue the importance of Lula's education level, the religion or atheism of FHC, the inconvenient combination of the names of the candidates of the government that sound like Serrairrita. None of this it has any importance to the decisions that will be made in November, however, this decision depends on the result of the ballot boxes. If Serra, Garotinho or Ciro Gomes were to be elected, the country's situation would not change. The three, to different degrees, intend to continue the modernization projects of FHC. They say that attracting foreign capital; liberating the entrance and exit of products and investments; reducing state intervention in the economy; paying rigorously what the IMF considers Brazil's external debt, will possibly give jobs, wages, housing, agrarian reform, education and health for all Brazilians. In a word: they say that they can modernize the country without modifying its social structure and changing political power. Serra confidently declares this position. His campaign motto -"continuity without continuing "- means that he intends to introduce modifications without continuing with the FHC's politics.

Changes in the Economic System

If Brazil is going to suffer four more years from the deepening of neoliberalism, it will be more difficult and laborious to reconstruct what is being destroyed. From there, the importance of the solid alternative proposal in Lula's Program. This proposal consists of changing the axle of the economic policy, placing priority on jobs, on the growth of the domestic market and on the payment of social debt All the more, including the question on the external debt (payment or no payment will depend on the plebiscite) and the modernization of the consumption standards of the rich classes will be three great priorities. To meet these priorities, we will need to have true agrarian reform, urban reform and policies that strive for industrialization. The motto "Land, Housing and Work" synthesizes the objectives of this Program. The only candidate who has the ability to implement this alternative model is Lula, as the identified priorities constitute programs of great importance to the PT, since the day it was born. The chances that Lula may win seems to grow more and more each day, as pressures for the downplaying and quieting of PT Program increase at the same rate. When foreign banks cause agitation about the "risk" in Brazil, if Lula were to win, they are testing the seriousness of the PT's program, including calibrating the attack that they are going to make in the campaign against the popular candidate.

If the PT yields to these pressures and dilutes its discourse, they will lose credibility. But, beware! If they stay strong, the PT will need to prepare itself for the most aggressive campaign Brazil has ever known.

Popular Participation

Lula alone will be able to resist this attack if he counts on the active participation of the popular activist leaders and social movements in the electoral campaign. But this necessary participation will need to be focused. It's not a question of going along with what the marketing people want -- that Lula should say only what scores him points among middle class voters and big businessmen. Yes, they try to teach the voters the basic points of the Workers Party's Program. In other words: to have propaganda with more emotion than the marketers will put on TV, outdoors etc., while clarifying the true meaning of Lula's election, in terms of social transformation, change of power and the substitution of the FHC political program.

Independence of MST

The MST's position of independence in the campaign fits perfectly within the PT's ideology of popular movements. Ever since the foundation of the PT and the MST back in the early 80s, it was very clear that one was not the "whip of transmission" of the other. The PT does not command the MST and nor does the MST command the PT. Both, the party and movements, are indespensible organizations in carrying out the social and political transformation of the country, but each one must act autonomously in its field. At certain moments, actions can be done together; at other times, each one will take the route that it considers fundamental to reaching its objectives. Sergipe: Irrigation Projects Do Not Discourage the Landless

After five years of drought, the Jacaré-Curituba Settlement community has the possibility of producing a great harvest this year of beans and corn. The area is located between the cities of Canindé of São Francisco and Poço Redondo, in the state's hinterland. The works of the irrigation project are again stopped. Another alternative found by the agricultural workers was the creation of small animals. Today there are about 6,000 thousand goats and sheep and 2,000 cows. One of the achievements of the 666 settled families, who resist the lack of policies in the region. In Italy, for example, more than 250 stores commercialize the tea produced in the mid-west region of Paraná by an MST herb plantation. 6 tons are sent every year to these countries. Brazilians can find mate (herbal tea), produced from the same MST cooperative with the trademark "Produto da Terra", or "Product of the Land."

Brazilian Labs Don't Detect Genetically Modified Organisms

The discovery was made by Greenpeace after the product, Mortadela Bolognella of the Perdigão brand, was tested in three different labs. While the Brazilian Biotechnology Laboratory of Belo Horizonte did not detect the presence of genetically modified soy in the examined product, the tests carried in the Interlabor Belp GAC Laboratory of Switzerland and in the DNA Chips Laboratory of Hong Kong, presented positive results, pointing to the contamination of 12% of genetically modified soy Roundup Ready in the product.

  Participação popular na eleição presidencial

Toda eleição para Presidente da República é uma tomada de decisão nacional importante. A maioria dos eleitores não tem consciência disso porque o sistema de propaganda eleitoral das classes dominantes faz com que o povo discuta detalhes sem importância para o que vai ser decidido. Por exemplo, um montão de papel está sendo gasto para discutir o grau de estudo do Lula, a religião ou o ateísmo de FHC, a combinação inconveniente dos nomes dos candidatos do governo que soa como Serrairrita. Nada disso tem a ver com a decisão que será tomada em novembro e, no entanto, esta decisão depende do resultado das urnas.

Se um dos eleitos for Serra, Garotinho ou Ciro Gomes, a situação do país não vai mudar em nada. Os três, em graus diferentes, pretendem continuar o projeto de modernização conservadora de FHC. Dizem que atraindo capitais estrangeiros; liberando a entrada e saída de produtos e investimentos; reduzindo a intervenção estatal na economia; pagando rigorosamente o que o FMI considerar como dívida externa do Brasil, será possível dar emprego, salário, moradia, reforma agrária, educação e saúde para todos os brasileiros. Em uma palavra: dizem que é possível modernizar o país sem alterar sua estrutura social e sem mudar o poder político. Serra declara esta posição explicitamente. O mote de sua campanha -"continuidade sem conti-nuísmo" - significa que pretende introduzir modificações de forma e não de conteúdo na política de FHC.

Mudanças no modelo econômico

Se o Brasil vier a sofrer outros quatro anos de aprofundamento do neoliberalismo, será mais difícil e penoso reconstruir o que está sendo destruído. Daí a importância da proposta alternativa consistente no Programa do Lula. Esta proposta consiste em mudar o eixo da política econômica, colocando a prioridade na oferta de emprego, no crescimento do mercado interno e no pagamento da dívida social. Tudo o mais, inclusive a questão da dívida externa (cujo pagamento ou não vai depender de um plebiscito) e a modernização dos padrões de consumo das classes ricas se subordinará às três grandes prioridades acima referidas. Para atendê-las, será necessário realizar uma verdadeira Reforma Agrária, uma reforma urbana e uma política decidida de retomada da industrialização. "Terra, Teto e Trabalho" sintetizam os objetivos deste Programa. O único dos candidatos que tem condições de implantar este modelo alternativo é o Lula, pois as prioridades mencionadas constituem programa do PT, desde sua fundação.

À medida que as chances de vitória de Lula parecem aumentar, aumentam na mesma proporção as pres-sões para o rebaixamento dos objetivos e prioridades do programa petista. Quando os bancos estrangeiros fazem o alvoroço que estão fazendo sobre o "risco" Brasil, caso o Lula vença o pleito, eles estão testando a seriedade do programa petista, inclusive para calibrar o ataque que vão fazer na campanha ao candidato popular.

Se o PT ceder a essas pressões e diluir seu discurso, perderá credibilidade. Mas, atenção! Se se mantiver firme, precisa preparar-se para a campanha mais agressiva que o Brasil já conheceu.

Participação popular

O Lula só poderá resistir a esse ataque se contar com a participação ativa dos seus militantes e dos movimentos populares na campanha eleitoral. Mas esta participação precisa ser bem enfocada. Não se trata de sair a reboque do que os marqueteiros querem que o Lula diga apenas aquilo que pode lhe dar pontos no eleitorado de classe média e entre os grandes empresários. Trata-se, isto sim, de levar aos eleitores os pontos básicos do Programa do Partido. Em outras palavras: completar a propaganda de caráter mais emocional que os marqueteiros irão levar a cabo na TV, nos outdoors etc. com o esclarecimento do verdadeiro significado da eleição do Lula, em termos de transformação social, de mudança do poder e de substituição do programa político de FHC.

Independência do MST

A posição de independência do MST na campanha enquadra-se perfeitamente, tanto na ideologia do partido quanto na ideologia dos movimentos populares. Desde a fundação do PT e do MST, lá no começo dos anos 80, ficou muito claro que um não é "correia de transmissão" do outro. Nem o PT comanda o MST e nem este comanda o PT. Nem para cá, nem para lá. Ambos, o partido e os movimentos, são indispensáveis para fazer a transformação política e social do país, mas cada um deve atuar autonomamente no seu campo. Em certos momentos, as ações podem ser conjugadas; em outros, cada um tomará o rumo que considera fundamental para atingir seus objetivos. Com maturidade e inteligência política, porém, pois, nestas alturas, ninguém está aí para "dar ouro pros bandidos".

Sergipe: obras de irrigação não fazem sem terra desanimar

Após cinco anos de seca, o Assentamento Jacaré-Curituba está com a possibilidade de uma grande safra este ano, com produção de feijão, milho e sorgo. A área está localizada entre os municípios de Canindé do São Francisco e Poço Redondo, sertão sergipano. As obras do projeto de irrigação estão novamente paradas.Outra alternativa encontrada pelos trabalhadores rurais foi a criação de pequenos animais. Hoje existem cerca de 6 mil, entre cabras e ovelhas, e 2 mil vacas. Uma conquista das 666 famílias assentadas, que resistem à falta de política para a região.

Segundo a Odebrech, empresa contratada para executá-las, não existem recursos, 8 milhões de reais, para a conclusão da distribuição dos canais internos. A paralisação levou ao desemprego 450 trabalhadores. E gerou um clima de tensão no Assentamento, que reivindica a imediata conclusão das obras.

Chá orgânico produzido pelo MST pode ser encontrado na Europa

O chá mate orgânico, através de programas com entidades que promovem o comércio solidário, pode ser encontrado na Itália e Alemanha. Na Itália, por exemplo, mais de 250 lojas comercializam o chá produzido na região centro-oeste do Paraná por uma ervateria do MST. São enviadas para estes países cerca de 6 toneladas por ano. O brasileiro pode encontrar erva-mate, produzida pela mesma cooperativa, com a marca Produto da Terra.

Laboratório brasileiro não detecta transgênicos

A constatação foi feita pelo Greenpeace após ter testado o produto Mortadela Bolognella, da marca Perdigão, em 3 laboratórios diferentes. Enquanto o laboratório brasileiro Transigência Biotecnologia, de Belo Horizonte, não detectou a presença de soja transgênica no produto examinado, os testes realizados nos laboratórios Interlabor Belp Ag da Suíça e no laboratório DNA chips de Hong Kong, apresentaram resultado positivo, apontando a contaminação de 12% de soja transgênica Roundup Ready no produto.
