Families Run the Risk of Eviction in Sao Paulo

The 700 families, with more than 200 children, of the Encampments Terra Sem Males and Irmã Alberta run the risk of being evicted at dawn from tomorrow (Thursday, 2/13). There has been some information indicating that the eviction will occur at 4AM which is forbidden by law. The encampments have been located on the Ithaye Farm, which belongs to Sabesp (the Basic Sanitation Company of São Paulo State) since July 2002.

Between August and October representatives of the MST met with several times with representatives of Sabesp, OAB (lawyers), the General Commander of the Military Police, the Secretary Justice Dr. Alexander de Moraes and in one of these meetings INCRA's Superintendent Dr. Geraldo Milkm also appeared. It was agreed by all parties that Itesp (the Land Institute of São Paulo) would have until the end of March 2003 to present an area where the families could be settled. During this period, ownership of the land would be suspended- a commitment assumed by the Sabesp/Incra/Itesp.

However, in December there was an amendment made so that there could be an eviction at any moment.

The area- a latifundio or large estate in Greater São Paulo - was destined to be a trash dump, but since the occupation has been transformed into produtive land and has created life for hundreds of encamped families.

Therefore, we are asking all of our friends who always believe in and fight for Agrarian Reform send messages to those responsible requesting 1) the not-fulfilment of the ownership reintegration; 2) an urgent meeting with representatives of all involved in search of a pacific solution to the situation. Famílias correm risco de despejo em São Paulo As setecentas famílias, sendo mais de 200 crianças, dos Acampamentos Terra Sem Males e Irmã Alberta correm o risco de sofrer um despejo durante a madrugada de amanhã (13/2), Quinta-feira. Há informações de que o despejo ocorrerá às 4 horas da manhã -- o que é proibido por lei. Os acampamentos estão localizados na Fazenda Ithaye, pertencente à Sabesp (Companhia de Saneamento Básico do Estado de São Paulo) desde julho de 2002.

Entre os meses de agosto e outubro foram realizadas diversas reuniões entre o MST e representantes da Sabesp, OAB, o Comandante Geral da PM, o Secretário de Justiça Dr. Alexandre de Moraes e numa delas também compareceu o Superintendente do Incra Dr. Geraldo Leite. Ficou acordado entre as partes que o Itesp (Instituto de Terras de São Paulo) teria até o final de março de 2003 para apresentar uma área na qual as famílias seriam assentadas. Durante esse período, a reintegração de posse ficaria suspensa -- compromisso assumido pela Sabesp/Incra/Itesp.

No entanto, em dezembro foi emitido um aditamento de mandado, o que significa que o despejo pode ser realizado a qualquer momento.

A área -- um latifúndio na Grande São Paulo - estava destinada a ser um lixão, mas desde a ocupação transformou-se em terra produtiva e criadora de vida para as centenas de famílias acampadas.

Por isso, pedimos a todos os companheiros e companheiras que sempre acreditaram e lutaram pela Reforma Agrária que enviem mensagens aos responsáveis solicitando o não-cumprimento da reintegração de posse e realização de audiência, em caráter de urgência, com os representantes das partes no intuito de buscar uma solução pacífica para a situação.
