[09/07/06] URGENT APPEAL: MST files habeas corpus for National Coordinator, Enio Bohnenberger **DRAFT E-LETTER INCLUDED**

CAMPAIGN FOR THE RELEASE OF ENIO BOHNENBERGER

Dear Friends of the MST,

As many of you are aware, on the 4th of July of 2006, a judge from the 11th District Court of Belo Horizonte ordered the preventative imprisonment of our colleague Enio, member of the MST's National Coordinating Body and a longtime Human Rights activist. Enio has been detained ever since.

The order of imprisonment was prepared in response to popular protests which took place at the headquarters of the Energy Company of Minas Gerais (CEMIG), located in Belo Horizonte, in Apil of this year. During the protests, demonstrators were brutally repressed by the police. Seven rural workers, including one minor, were clubbed and arrested. Another 17 protestors were hospitalized as a result of their injuries, three of whom remain in serious condition. The court argued that Enio's membership in a social movement and his active participation in the aforementioned protest are proof that he represents a risk to the "Public Order".

On Tuesday [09/05/06] we filed for habeas corpus at the Minas Gerais Tribunal of Justice.

It is very important that all organizations, movements, friends of the MST and others send letters to the authorities, demanding the immediate release of our dear colleague.

Below you will find a draft letter with the necessary information (in Portuguese). In summary, the letter demonstrates that Mr. Enio Bohnenberger is a committed Human Rights activist, with a fixed place of residence and a family to care for, who poses no threat to the Public Order. As such, it calls for justice in the case, and for the immediate release of Mr. Bohnenberger.

Please take a moment to personalize and email the following letter as soon as possible. The judge involved in the case will be considering the habeas corpus at any moment.

A strong embrace,
Giane Alvares
MST's Human Rights Sector
