[08/23/06] Civil society mobilizes against impunity and the criminalization of social movements in Pernambuco

The Pastoral Land Commission of Pernambuco (CPT-PE) is calling all members of civil society into action, demanding an end to the increasing criminalization of the social movements and the impunity that reigns in cases of violence towards human rights defenders and activists.

Demonstrators will demand justice in the case of two Landless Workers, murdered on August 20th in Pernambuco, and insist upon the immediate release of Jaime Amorim, of the MST’s National Coordinating Body, who was detained on Monday en route to the funeral of the aforementioned murdered Landless Workers. Amorim is being charged for his participation in a public demonstration in front of the U.S. Embassy in Pernambuco late last year.

Demonstrations are scheduled to occur today, at 4:00pm, in front of the Supreme Justice Tribunal of Pernambuco. In attendance will be members of the social movements from both the urban and rural areas, human rights defenders/advocates, NGOs as well as members of the clergy.
