[12/26/06] Lawyers for peoples' movements, including MST, recognized in Brazil

Activists of the MST, La Via Campesina and the other social movements are all very proud and pleased with the recognition - by Brazilian society - of our militant legal defendors.

(1) Jacques Alfonsin: Lawyer of the peoples' movements, the MST, a judicial advisor, and a founding member of RENAP (National Network of Popular Lawyers), received the Farroupilha Medal - the most significant recognition awarded by the Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul - in recognition of dedication to the peoples' struggle.

(2) Aton fon Filho: Lawyer of the peoples' movements, the quilombos of the Alcantara Base, the MST, also a founding member of RENAP as well as a member of the Social Network for Human Rights, received the National Human Rights Award - awarded by the Federal Government's Human Rights Secretary and the National Human Rights Movement.
