Oppression of MST and Social Movements

To denounce the criminalization of popular movements, around a thousand people gathered this Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the National School Florestan Fernandes (ENFF), in Guararema (SP), in solidarity with the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST). The act is a response to the truculent action of civilian police, who invaded the school, fired bullets at students and militants, and imprisoned two members of ENFF, on Friday, November 4, 2016.

The day mobilized 30,000 people in 14 states plus the Federal District, with land occupations, public buildings and marches held by a broad unity of the movements of the countryside

This week, popular movements, unions, and religious organizations who work in rural areas carried out the “Days of Unified Struggle of Rural Workers.” The days of struggle involved building occupations and blockade of roads — which started on Monday, Sept. 5, and ended on Thursday, Sept. 7.

As the Olympic Games come to a close in Rio de Janeiro, non-governmental organizations and unions in the United States are condemning the impeachment process against Brazil’s president. A public statement released today states: “We, the undersigned organizations, support democracy in Brazil and denounce the forced removal of Brazil’s elected president, Dilma Rousseff, as well as the criminalization and repression of Brazilian social movements.”

The Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST), in the State of Goias, located in center-west Brazil, is preparing to take the case of political imprisonments to international organizations. Currently, this State is known for the increase in repression to popular movements. There are already three political prisoners, and two of them are MST members.

Last Thursday April 7, in the afternoon, families from the Rural Landless Worker’s Movement that were organized in the camp Don Tomás Baudino in the Quedas do Iguaçu municipality, central region of the state of Paraná, were victims of an ambush by the military police and private security forces of the logging company Araupel.
